Fishgen's Biodiversity Policy
Introduction
Fishgen’s
business is to supply good quality fish seed and/or broodstock for aquaculture,
with a current emphasis on tilapia.
As a result Fishgen is involved in shipping fish to various parts of the
world to a wide client base.
Fishgen is conscious that widespread introductions of fish species and
strain for aquaculture carry a risk of compromising fish biodiversity through
the impact of introduced species on indigenous habitat and species diversity.
Furthermore, unique genetic diversity of species can be impacted upon by
con-specific introductions with the possibility that important reservoirs of
this genetic diversity will be contaminated or lost.
Fishgen
is aware of the potential biodiversity implications of the introductions and
fish transfers in which it is involved and wishes to act in a responsible way
and has thus developed this biodiversity policy to provide guidelines for its
actions.
Policy
Fishgen
will attempt to act responsibly in all introductions and transfers in which it
is involved and specifically:
·
Fishgen will not knowingly support the transfer of fish species to
countries or regions where its introduction is prohibited
·
Fishgen will not knowingly support the transfer of fish species or
strains to countries or regions where there is a significant possibility that
such introductions will result in the contamination of important indigenous
populations of the species concerned.
